Shakib Al Hasan, the renowned Bangladesh all-rounder and former captain, will continue to represent his team in the ongoing cricket tour of Pakistan despite recent legal challenges. This decision follows a murder case filed against him, which has put both Shakib and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) under scrutiny.
The BCB has faced mounting pressure regarding Shakib’s participation in the series. However, the board has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting him, emphasizing that the allegations against Shakib are still at the FIR level, with several legal steps yet to follow. BCB President Faruque Ahmed conveyed the board’s stance, stating that Shakib will be allowed to play until proven guilty. “We have maintained our previous decision. Shakib will continue playing, and we will provide him with legal assistance as he is an important player under contract,” Ahmed told Prothom Alo.
Shakib’s contributions on the field have been significant, including his crucial role in Bangladesh’s historic 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He took three vital wickets in the second innings, underscoring his importance to the team.
Looking ahead, the BCB has planned for Shakib to be part of the squad for the upcoming Test series in India, following the conclusion of the Pakistan tour. The team will return to Bangladesh on September 4 and depart for India on September 15. However, Shakib will not be returning to Bangladesh during this period; instead, he will head to England to play County Cricket for Surrey, having already received the BCB’s no-objection certificate.
The murder case against Shakib, involving accusations related to the death of a garment worker, Md. Rubel, in Adabar on August 5, has raised concerns. Shakib was named in the case along with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other individuals. Despite this, Shakib’s involvement in international cricket remains unaffected for now, as the BCB stands firm in its support, ensuring that legal matters do not impede his professional commitments.
The BCB’s decision reflects their confidence in Shakib’s integrity and their commitment to providing him with necessary support while he continues to contribute to the team’s success on the international stage.
