Debutant Nayeem Hasan not only became the youngest Bangladesh bowler to bag five wickets in a Test innings he reached new heights in his maiden Test becoming the youngest bowler in Test cricket to take five wickets on debut.
The off-spinner bagged the wicket of Jomel Warrican to complete his five-wicket haul in the first Test against West Indies at Chattogram today. He overtook Pat Cummins ‘s record – the Australia paceman achieved the feat aged 18 years 193 days — to become the youngest to attain the record. He also beat the record held by Enamul Haque Jr, who had bagged five against Zimabwe in 2005 at the age of 18 years and 32 days, to become Bangladesh’s youngest to the feat.
Chattogram-born Nayeem, currently aged 17 years and 356 had already made a notable contribution with the bat on Day 1 when he received body blows but preserved his wicket on Day 1. He is the eighth Bangladesh player to get five wickets in debut with off-spinner Mehedi Miraz being the last player to have achieved the feat when he bagged six wickets against England in 2016. Nayeem is now fourth in the list all-time list of youngest player to take five wickets in an innings as well.
