Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump: Tense First Debate Highlights Foreign Policy, Abortion Rights, and January 6 Chaos

Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican challenger Donald Trump faced off for the first time in a highly anticipated presidential debate on Tuesday night. With the general election just eight weeks away, the debate, held at 9pm ET, set the stage for a heated exchange between the two candidates.

The debate marked the second of the election cycle but the first appearance for Harris, who replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee after his withdrawal in July. Throughout the night, Harris and Trump sparred over key issues including foreign policy, abortion rights, and the events of January 6.

Harris criticized Trump’s approach to Afghanistan, accusing him of mismanaging the withdrawal deal and meeting with the Taliban. Trump, in turn, defended his record and blamed the Biden administration for the failed pullout. On Israel, Trump asserted that there would be no ongoing conflicts under his presidency, while Harris advocated for a two-state solution and an end to hostilities.

The discussion also turned to abortion rights, where Trump argued that the issue should be decided by states, while Harris condemned Project 2025 and argued that restrictive bans undermine women’s healthcare. Regarding January 6, Trump refused to express regrets over the riot, while Harris emphasized the need for the nation to “turn the page” and heal from the chaos of that day.

In their closing statements, Harris focused on a vision for the future, while Trump characterized the US as a “failing nation.” The debate showcased sharp contrasts between the candidates, setting the tone for the coming weeks as the November 5 election approaches.
