The government is issuing ID cards to freelancers. Our country is moving forward in freelancing keeping pace with the world and the government is determined to recognize freelancers professionally. Professional recognition is required for various activities including bank loan, admission of children in a good school, travelling abroad and so on. The ‘freelancer ID card’ has been introduced to solve thousands of such problems and open new horizons in work.
The government’s ICT Division, Startup Bangladesh and Bangladesh Freelancer Development Society (BFDS) are working together so freelancers can find their own work certificate. BFDS has been working for a long time on how to give freelancers a recognition. The chairman of the organization, Tanjiba Rahman said, “Even though the initiative was started privately, the government has been thinking about the issue for a long time. So, this initiative was started jointly. However, BFDS will take care of the entire technical matter. A large remittance is coming from the freelancing sector. But it not have the right calculation because it did not have the right direction. On the other hand, freelancers are also facing various problems. In the meantime, eight thousand freelancers have registered on our site. Gradually all the freelancers in the country will be added. For freelancers, this ID card will be completely virtual. However, anyone can print it if they want.”
How to register:
To register as a freelancer, one must go to the link (freelancers.gov.bd). Account can be created here with name (according to NID), e-mail, mobile and an eight letter password. One will be asked to verify the e-mail when signing up for the account. At the end of the verification one can login to the account. The next task after logging in is important. Clicking on the ‘Freelancer ID’ button will bring up a four-step form. In the first step, name, national identity card number (NID is required to complete the verification), phone number must be given. In the second step, the freelancer has to submit all the information of his work and the amount of income for the last 12 months. The third step is to give some more information about the career and lastly to attach the picture. Since this information will be verified against the person’s NID, it is important to select images that match the image in the NID and the image attached to the website. Results will be notified via email after verification within 7 days of submission of application.
Anyone can claim the ID by claiming to be a freelancer. However, certain conditions have to be fulfilled. The person concerned must be a citizen of Bangladesh, earn at least one thousand US dollars in the last 12 months, work in the online marketplace and have proof of income and income in the right process. One can register as a freelancer only if they fulfill all these four conditions.
Freelancer’s income information will be verified through bank statement. If the income is said to be one thousand dollars, the application will be rejected if there is no account of that dollar through the bank or any source of income. So, in no way can wrong information be given. Freelancer registration fee is one thousand BDT 500, which can be paid by card or MFS. If the registration is canceled, the money will be refunded. The information has to be updated once every 12 months and the update fee is BDT 1500 per year. Many do not work in the marketplace. In that case, the freelancer must give a statement of how much money the client abroad has sent. If all the information is correct, the virtual card will be issued within seven working days. The authority may contact the applicant via video call or any other means to confirm the information. Any proof or bank statement may be required as proof of earnings. If someone does not work with the marketplace or directly with the client, they can also register if they work under someone locally; In that case they can register as a team member of the freelancer.
Advantages:
To get a credit card from a bank, to apply for passport-visa and all government sectors, one now needs to have a government-registered freelancer ID. In addition, this ID will be an important tool to get 10% cash incentive provided by the government in the future IT sector.
The freelancers.gov.bd web portal and app will soon have some more helpful features for freelancers. These features include – Tutorial Hub, Mentor Marketplace, Freelancer Events, Freelancers Banking, Freelancers Welfare, Community etc.
In addition to the personal benefits of freelancers, the freelancer ID card will be considered as a reliable source of information for the government. Although there is little information about the income of freelancers as a whole at present, there is no real picture or detailed information about the freelancing profession in the country at any level, public or private. Due to this, the work of building new freelancers across the country and bringing them to the destination of success is being hampered. It is hoped that the freelancer ID card will reveal the real picture of freelancers in the country.
