ACM ICPC programming contest starts

World’s most prestigious computer programming contest arranged by ACM, the International Collegiate Programming Contest 2015’s Dhaka round starts 5 december and continue to 6 December. Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) is arranging this year’s contest. The actual contest will start from 6th December. This Tuesday, in a press conference, BUBT high officials made this announcement.

Present at the press conference, Dr. Md. Kaykobad from Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology said: “By 2025 most of the menial work that we see now will be done by machines and computer programs. So in order to cope with the work load we need to address the fact that we need more skilled programmers. I also urge the media to promote these events properly so that people can understand the importance of these competitions.”

Professor Abul L. Haque from North South University said: “Arranging this competition is indeed an honor for Bangladesh. Bangladeshi students and competitors have done really good in these competitions.” Also present at the press conference were BUBT Vice Chancellor Dr. Abu Saleh, Registrar Enayet Hossain Mia, BUBT Dean of Applied Science and Engineering Mominul Haque, Computer Science and Engineering Chairman Raisul Alam, BdOSN General Secretary Munir Hassan and many more dignitaries.

Recent World Champion teams have been recognized by their country’s head of state and at the annual ACM Awards Ceremony

The team registration will be held in the permanent campus of BUBT on December 05, 2014. A mock contest will be held on the same day. BUBT is providing the accommodation and conveyance to most of the contestants who will participate from outside the city. This has been arranged by BUBT for the very first time.

For those who don’t know: ACM ICPC is an annual multi-tiered competitive programming competition among the universities of the world. The contest is sponsored by IBM. Headquartered at Baylor University, with autonomous regions in six continents, the ICPC is directed by Baylor Professor William B. Poucher, Executive Director, and operates under the auspices of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals, ACM-ICPC World Finals, is the final round of competition.

Over the course of time it has become a 4-day event held in the finest venues worldwide. UPE recognizes all of the regional champions at the event. Recent World Champion teams have been recognized by their country’s head of state and at the annual ACM Awards Ceremony. Compared to other programming contests (for example, International Olympiad in Informatics), the ICPC is characterized by a large number of problems (8 or more problems in just 5 hours). Another feature is that each team can use only one computer, although teams have three students. This makes the time pressure even greater. Good teamwork and ability to withstand pressure is needed to win.
